Hermel thinks briefly about answering Sir Elad's question but decides against it out of fear of loosing anything vital on his body.

OOC: I updated the first post with the maps you have knowledge of and two PDF files that should answer most of your rules questions and help you should you need to check things. If there are still uncertainties, ask me

As he knew nothing of the location or the situation Sir Elad was speaking of Calum listened very closely then asked his question "M'lord do we have a point of contact so we can gather information. Prehaps its as you think a Saxon dog interfering with the peasents?"

Sir Elad nodded "Aye Calum. In Imber you'll meet Old Garr, the town priest. I've met the man once or twice in the past, but can't tell you much. He's a priest, son of a lesser knight and old. You can bring me word of him as well while you're there, it's always good to know what kind of men inhabit our lord's lands and look after its people."

Calum makes a point of not touching his food. It sits on his trencher of bread hot and steaming and yet he doesn't touch it.

Despite Calum's best attempts at drawing attention to him not eating, Sir Elad paid him no heed, whether by deliberate ignoring of Calum's actions or by genuine unawareness the young squire could not say. When he was finished, he motioned the servants to carry off the tankards and remainders of the food and sent the squires to their beds. On their way they were met by Guy, returning from the kitchen and smelling of onion. As the darkness fell over the motte and bailey, the foursome fell asleep.
The next day after breakfast they assembled on the yard, where they were met by Sir Elad. "For today's training, I have something special planned, but first you need to warm up yourselves and your steeds. Each of you is aware of the oak on the southern hill, I want you to ride there as fast as you can and ride back. The first one back is the victor. Try not to break your necks while racing each other, the time for that comes later" the elder knight said. "Now, unless you have questions, go mount your chargers and meet me at the castle gate"
OOC: What follows is a horse race. Each of you will use your fastest (and only) horse in this round but later on you may choose another horse (for example, a rouncy). Each round each of you moves along a column (that I have) the horse's movement value. In addition, each of you rolls a horsemanship test: a success means you move one extra square, a critical success means 2 extra squares and a fumble means you fall off and take 1d6 damage and must take one action to get back on your horse. The one who first reaches the end of the column is the winner. Ties are possible.
HOWEVER, in order to not make this sort of segments take three weeks, each of you will only roll once and I will roll the remainder, if it is necessary. We will use the same method in prolonged combat (such as battles), where you will be allowed to choose passions, weapons etc. to use but because of the limitations of the medium (i.e. not real-time internet), these segments would simply take too long to make for good RPing or storytelling.

Hermel nods when asked if he has any questions and heads towards the stalls to ready his horse.

"Milord" Guy responds to the dismissal with a bow, and heads for the stables full of eagerness. When out of hearing range of Sir Elad Guy turns to Calum while walking.
"Thanks for your gesture of support yesterday, but you had no need to do that. You need all the strength you can muster to beat me today! Five denarii says that I'll finish before you!"
Guy added with a friendly laugh and a small pat on the back

Calum as was his way is silent as he entered the barn and found his horse. He patted the animal's soft nose speaking softly to it "Hello brother, I've need of your strength today." With gentle hands he places bridle in a soft mouth and a thick well made saddle blanket under his saddle and leads his horse out to the area and then mounts waiting for the signal to run.

Rhowain stayed quiet, he focused to the task at hand. He petted his horse in silence while watching others prepairing. He was ready to go.

With no- one answering his bet, Guy shrugs his shoulders and walks to the stables in silence like the others. He prepares his horse for the race, making sure every strap is tight and nothing of extra weight is tugged along. He then rides to the gates with the others to meet Sir Elad once again.

The four squires assembled at the gate in a row, waiting for Sir Elad's signal. The old knight walked slightly past them so they could all see him and raised his hand "Remember squires, no broken necks" he said and let his hand drop.
What followed was unexpected to say the least. Guy, having dedicated his time more to the study of the language of his mother's people the Romans was by far the worst horseman of the group, but yet he charged forwards with a speed that left the other three coughing dust. "After him!" Sir Elad shouted and the three managed to push their chargers into full speed and the race was afoot.
After the failed start, Calum and Rhowain improved their pace, racing head to head behind Guy. The two were grinning as they closed in on the current leader and Guy urged his mount forward, desperate to make up for yesterday's failure. Behind them, Hermel followed, but falling further behind. He gritted his teeth, knowing that there was a tongue-lashing coming if he didn't improve his performance.
As Guy rounded the tree, he could spot Sir Perin sitting on a branch, waving and cheering the squires on. As his mounts head pointed towards the castle, he could for a moment see the hindquarters of Rhowain's and Calum's mounts. Both young squires were excellent riders, and Guy muttered a prayer for God to speed his way. Behind the three squires Hermel had found his wind and was catching up to them, fast.
Guy could see the gate of the castle and Sir Elad's approving smile rushing towards him at a staggering pace, but then at the corner of his eyes he saw two shapes on either side. Rhowain and Calum! They had caught up with him. Pressing down against the neck of his horse he urged the mount to go faster, but both his opponents did the same, and had begun earlier. The race was going to be a close one and at the heels of the trio, Hermel was in spitting distance.
"Well done!" Sir Elad exclaimed as the four squires charged through the gate, almost simultaneously. The old marshal clapped his hands together slowly and approached them, their horses breathing heavily and their brows glistening with sweat. "Well done indeed. Especially you Guy, that start was marvelous. You left your comrades far in your wake. Now, as for the next surprise, there will be a joust. I don't have the time to leave for Imber and Sir Perin has suggested that as you are soon to become knights, you should learn to lead yourselves. Therefore, the winner of the joust will be named the leader of this undertaking. Guy, as recognition for your success, if not quite victory, in the race, you will get to choose your opponent first" the old knight nodded at Guy. "Choose wisely"
OOC: The results for the race were: Guy was the only one with a successful start, whereas everyone else failed. Luckily, no one fumbled, that would have been bad. In the following round, Hermel failed his roll (18) while the rest were successful, but no criticals. The following two rounds everyone was successful, but in the last round Guy failed (19, close to fumble) and Rhowain and Calum were able to catch up and finish at the same time. However, due to Guy having stayed in the lead despite his worse Horsemanship skill (13 vs. everyone else's 15), I decided to give him the victory.
What follows next is a joust. Players will use their Lance skills in opposition to determine the winner of a round. I will let players roll all of their rolls, they can do so either here or on Skype, I will only write the results of the dice rolls, everything else is up to you guys. The goal is to get as close to your Joust skill as possible without going over. The one with the higher roll wins. In case of ties, the one with a higher skill wins. If skills are even, funny things happen. Criticals trump all other successes, but if there are two criticals, the higher skill wins. If skills are even and both roll a critical, very funny things happen. If either player rolls a fumble, well...just try not to fumble. If BOTH players fumble, hilarity ensues. Questions?

Still panting from the effort the race took, Guy allowed himself a broad smile as he realized he had won. Against his betters. After a few moments of congratulating himself Guy brought himself to think of the joust ahead. He would need every bit of his concentration to not repeat the mistake he made yesterday. The day had started really well, albeit with a hunger in his stomach, and by the gods, Guy would have the day continue like this and win the joust as well.
Guy relaxedly steered his mount closer to the other squires and looked at Rhowain with a smile.
"I'll choose... Calum as my first opponent" He said, quickly changing his gaze from Rhowain to Calum, now his smile a challenge. Determination could be seen in Guy's eyes, as he steered closer to Calum to shake his hand.
"This time I shall not fail" Guy said so that everyone could hear it.

Calum staying oddly quiet shakes his friend's hand nodding in acknowledgement and guiding his horse with only his knees takes his position. He made no use of his voice trusting his mount and skill. To much bragging lead to failure.

The two squires rode to the opposing ends of the yard and had lances, shields and helmets brought to them. Sir Elad himself strode between them to give them the signal to begin. The young men were tense, both excellent jousters and this was their first chance at a real position to gain glory outside their own small circle. Not a matter of life and death, but of even greater importance: the pride of young men.
A gentle breeze blew through the yard, russling the hair of the old marshal. Raising his hand above his head, he looked from one squire to the other. After both had nodded their readiness, Sir Elad let his hand fall and quickly ran backwards to avoid being caught in the middle of two charging horses. With a resounding "Hyah!" Guy charged forward, his lance pointed at his opponent. On the other end of the yard Calum ordered his horse to charge as well, the lance as steady and level as could be.
It all took a mere few seconds. A thunder of hooves pounding packed dirt, the sound of lance shattering on shild and the resounding crash and thud of a body hitting the ground as Calum was catapulted from his saddle by the picture perfect form of Guy. The young squire of Roman descent had decidedly wiped yesterdays failure from the minds of everyone as he let out a triumphant shout and trotted his steed to a halt. Sir Elad was clapping his hands slowly and Sir Perin, having just arrived from his watch at the tree, was grinning widely and joined Guy in his cheers.
OOC: Guy rolled a critical (15 Lance skill 15) and Calum rolled a success (9 Lance skill 15). Therefore Guy wins, but as this is a practice joust, no damage has been dealt.
